Written by Elliott McNamee | March 31, 2022

Quick: what’s the easiest way to save your travel program money in 2022?

Answer: use your unused tickets! AmTrav clients saved 10% on airfare in 2021 using unused tickets — 50% more than competing booking tools.

AmTrav makes savings easy by automatically storing unused tickets in your Unused Ticket Report then lets bookers apply credits with one click at booking.

Here’s an update on the latest ticket expiration dates from the biggest U.S. airlines, as reflected in your Unused Ticket Report:

  • American Airlines: this is the big news – American just announced that tickets issued in 2020 and 2021 are now valid to be redeemed through September 30, 2022 (extended from March 31, 2022) for travel by December 31, 2022. Travelers must be AAdvantage members to redeem these unused tickets, your travelers can sign up here if they’re not already members.*
  • Delta Air Lines: unused tickets can be exchanged until December 31, 2023 for travel through the end of 2024.
  • Southwest Airlines: certain unused tickets issued in 2019 and 2020 can be exchanged for travel through September 7, 2022, other tickets are good for travel until one year after the original issue date.
  • United Airlines: unused tickets issued between May 1, 2019 and December 31, 2022 (yes, in the future at the end of 2022) can be exchanged until December 31, 2023 for travel starting by December 31, 2023. Certain United Airlines tickets are also eligible for refund (learn more about this offer that clients used to recover $500,000 in 2021!).
  • Alaska Airlines: no active expiration date extensions, unused tickets can be exchanged for travel up to 12 months after the original issue date.
  • JetBlue: no active expiration date extensions, unused tickets can be exchanged up to 12 months after the original issue date.

(Note: certain tickets like Basic Economy and partially-used tickets may not be eligible for exchange.)

By the way unused tickets can still be transferred between travelers in certain cases, the latest rules on ticket transfers are in the Knowledge Base.
