Winter Flight Delays: Insights to Keep Your Team on Time
Winter travel can feel like a roll of the dice—snowstorms, fog, and flight delays are par for the course. But with the right insights, you can stack...
As we eagerly look forward to the summer, we're reminded that this season brings with it unique challenges for travelers - thunderstorms, crowded planes, packed hotels, and booked-out car rentals. However, reflecting on summer 2022, it wasn't as severe as we had predicted, with just 25% of flights delayed or canceled, down from 26% in 2021. But let's not forget that summer still presents the trickiest time for reliable travel. To help you prepare, we've taken a deep dive into last year's data to equip you with valuable advice for your upcoming travels.
Our insights come from a comprehensive analysis of the Department of Transportation's data from the summer of 2022, encompassing over 1.8 million flights operated by U.S. carriers within the country.
Fly early: Our data shows morning flights experience fewer disruptions.
Only 16% of morning flights faced delays or cancellations.
Afternoon and evening flights had disruption rates of 30% and 36%, respectively.
Opt for mid-week travel: Tuesday and Wednesday flights are not only cheaper but also more reliable.
Fares on these days are typically 15% cheaper.
The disruption rate drops to 22% from 27% on other days.
Choose your itinerary wisely: Nonstop flights have a significantly lower risk of delay or cancellation than connecting flights.
Select your airline judiciously: While Alaska, Delta, and United were more reliable last summer, the recent 2023 data shows that all six major carriers (except JetBlue) have comparable on-time performances.
Remember, while airlines are often the focus of travel disruptions, issues with hotels and car rentals can also throw a wrench in your plans. To make your experience as seamless as possible:
Enroll in loyalty programs: These programs offer points and perks, including potentially skipping the front desk.
Download our recommended apps: These apps can allow you to check in or pick up your car rental without the usual desk stop.
Use your corporate rates: Particularly for car rentals, our data shows AmTrav customers saved an average of 38% in 2022 using these rates.
Here at AmTrav, we're committed to our mission of empowering companies and their people to go places, meet people, and grow further. Beyond providing a seamless booking and travel experience, we're passionate about equipping you with the insights you need to make the best decisions for your travels.
