How Much Did Your Company Save with American's Lowest Fares?

Written by Elliott McNamee | January 12, 2024

Last week AmTrav released the “Where are the fAAres?” report diving into how often American Airlines’ fares were lower on AA.com and AmTrav compared to legacy corporate booking tools.

So those corporate booking tools were missing the lowest fare (fAAre) 47% of the time – if you had access to those fares, how much did your company save?

If you’re an AmTrav customer, this savings data is in your Travel Reports including at a booking-level in the Air Spend Report, ticket-level in the Air Ticket Report, and airline level in the Airline report, all of which can be filtered and sorted, downloaded for further manipulation and analysis.

If you're not an AmTrav customer but had NDC access, you can calculate how much your company saved: multiply your American spend between April 3 and December 31, 2023 by 10.5%.

Or get more precise, multiply April 3-July 31 by 8.4%, then your August 1-December 31 spend by 12.1%, and add those together.

Take that number and put it on your performance review – that’s the saving that your company enjoyed and your competitors didn’t!

But if you didn't have access to American's lowest fares, what did that cost your company?

Take your American spend between April 3-December 31, multiply that number by 9.4%. That’s the amount that your company overpaid because your bookers couldn’t access the lowest fares.

Or get more precise: take your American spend between April 3-July 31, multiply that number by 7.8%, then take your American spend between August 1-December 31, multiply that number by 10.8%. Add those two numbers together, there’s a slightly more precise estimate that reflects the additional fares that American removed starting in August.

Want to get really precise? Multiply your American spend each month by the following percentages:

(By the way, all this assumes that you have easy access to reliable spend data by airline – you do, right? If not, check out AmTrav’s data reports that give you the real-time spend visibility that you need, including data by ticket, airline, traveler, and more.)

Now, last year is last year, you need access to these fares now. Based on November and December your company could save more than 12% on American (plus more with Southwest Airlines and United Airlines who have fares removed from corporate booking tools!).
